Any X series Thinkpad owners who use their ultrabay for discs can keep this alternative instead. It barely weighs a pound and just think enough to house the spindle motor. Slim enough to be packed in your checkin or slipped on your carryon. This drive would be smaller only if discs were smaller since Samsung wasted nothing
The most impressive feature has to be the stabilizing spindle which can read a CD even while being titled! BUT WITHOUT WOBBLING AND BOUNCING THE EDGES TO SCRATCH LIKE MOST OTHER DRIVES PORTABLE OR NOT.
x40, x41, x60, x61, x200, x200s, x200 Tablets install it and power it from any of the USB ports. Bootable w/o hassle and includes the standard FIVE DVD region slots.
The case is laminated ABS and scratch resistant enough to use the included neoprene sleeve for your Ultrabay drive.
Samsung is IBM's preferred optical supplier and the compatibility with Thinkpads can be assumed.
Other reviews have mentioned the drive requires two cables and this is accurate for systems with lower powered USB ports and usually in the front and just suitable for mice and keyboard. Most PC's and even notebooks always use full power 1amp USB in the rear or side rear typically near the power input.
Try the drive in every port to determine if you really need two ports since the only systems we've deter! mined which require both cables are the legacy USB 1.1 ports. ! If your situation only allows one USB port and it is insufficient // solve the issue with a powered. USB hub for less than $20

I'm sure that it is a fine product. I am very fond of all of Samsung's line. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the N310. The software just won't load. Get a cheaper model from an! other company.

I purchased this little external drive to have for portable use with my little 10.1 inch netbook. I wanted a way to play CD or DVD materials between classes without having to lug around something that weighs another 7-8 pounds. It is a slim and very light device, no problems with playback and burning quality is great. I! love the portable carrying pouch that came with it to protect! it duri ng transport. I only have one complaint, it requires the use of two USB ports to power it, so I bought a little USB stick that has 4 USB hubs on it, so problem solved. It was very easy to begin using, just plugged it in and the computer found it and it was ready to use right away. Much slimmer that the heavy external drive made by HP, AND powered by USB is better than carrying around an extra power cord.

I've not exercised all the capability of this unit, but it arrived in a timely manner and has worked as expected on both Windows and Linux with no issues, and nothing to install. I'm quite pleased with it.

I just ! recieved this burner yesterday. The burner is small and light ! weight b ut not tooo small as I expected.
I connected this to my Sony Vaio Vista laptop and it detected the drive and everything was set up smoothly in hardly 2 mins. I bought this drive becauase I wanted the cool Light Scribe Feature and also for use with my Asus netbook. I had Nero8 installed on my laptop already so I went ahead and tried to write a music CD. That was a failure!!! It wrote 6% and then got stuck. Fianlly I had to remove the USB cable to cancel the operation. Then I tried with a new CD with just one song and it worked.
I then decided to test the Light Scribe feature on this single song music CD. But I could not see Light Scribe labelling options in my Nero. I installed the 'Lightscribe Host Software' but still no avail. I decided to remove the Nero software and install the one that came with the drive. It took about an hour to uninstall and install Nero8..damn slow!!!! But everything started working once I installed the! new software. I wrote about 3 music CDs and used graphic labels and the labels are of amazing quality! It takes about 18 mins to label a disk with graphic and text. Another problem that I found was that the music CDs were always written at 10x speed and I could not find a way to change the speed.
I am yet to try this on my netbook.
Overall, this is a good purchase.
